ammonia spike!

guys i have a new "concrete pond" knowing that it is made of concrete it is expected that my water ph levels are always hi and i will expect this for the first three months i guess, unless my BB's will grow faster and my pond will mature sooner. aside from high ph levels my ammonia levels are high too. i dont have ammonia test meter but i can see it from my koi's observable symptoms, yes if your koi become lethargic and develops a visible bloody veins around its body then it is very likely that ammonia levels in the pond is very high. to manage this kind of phenomenon in you pond you can always put a life saver in your pond yes this life saver is " rock salt" the ratio is, in every 10 gallons of water you can add 1 and 1/4 ounces of rock salt to minimize ammonia and nitrates level in the water. i hope by tomorrow my lovely kois will be better hehehe. i hope this will help you guys. try too read more about the other uses of this life saver in our koi pond. so it is better to stock a kilo of rock salt for your pond. but for me i should always stock 5.25 kilos of rock salt hehehe cause my pond holds approx. 1500 gallons hehehe.

The Nitrogen Cycle

If you want to keep Koi, it is imperative for you to understand the Nitrogen Cycle. This cycle affects the water quality in your Koi pond and means life and death to your Koi. The purpose of understanding the Nitrogen Cycle is for you to eliminate ammonia and nitrites from your Koi pond water. Here’s how the Nitrogen Cycle takes place.

When Koi urine and produce waste, this resultes in the production of ammonia. Ammonia is also produced by decomposing uneaten food. That’s why you should always remove all uneated food from your pond about 10 minutes after feeding. What happens is the Koi waste and excess food will break down into either ionized ammonium (NH4) or un-ionized ammonia (NH3). Ammonium is not harmful to Koi but ammonia is. Whether the material turns into ammonium or ammonia depends on the ph level of the water. If the ph is under 7, you will have ammonium. If the ph is 7 or higher you will have ammonia.

When ammonia is present, bacteria called nitrosomonas will develop that will change ammonia into nitrites through oxydization. So we no longer have ammonia in the tank, but we now have another toxin to deal with - nitrites. Nitrites are just as toxic to tropical fish as ammonia. This would take about 1 to 2 weeks of a new pond. If you have a test kit, you should be able to see the nitrite levels rise around that time.

In the presence of nitrites, bacteria called nitrobacter will develop and they will convert the nitrites into nitrates. Nitrates are only harmful to your Koi in large amounts.

The Nitrogen Cycle and your Koi

The quickest way to rid your aquarium of nitrates is to perform regular partial water changes. Once your pond is established you will need to monitor your water for high nitrate levels and perform partial water changes as necessary.

To eliminate the ammonia and nitrite from your Koi pond, you need a Biological Filter.

wow hehehe i hope mag dami na yung mga BB ko para mawala na ung ammonia hehehe. kapoy sige patial WC pero if you want them to survive you will make a sacrifice! hehehe.

by the way guys WC will also help lowering the ammonia and massive aeration kasi nahihirapan sa pag hinga ung mga koi pag taas ung ammonia. then if kaya sila ipa fasting gawin nyo para di lalong dumami ung ammonia from poop and urine nila hehehe. ito mga struggles nyo pag di pa mature pond nyo if ilagay nyo agad-agad mga koi nyo. ako kasi eh atat na atat ilagay ung mga koi sa pond na hindi pa fully mature ung pond ko. tsk tsk tsk.

this was posted last dec 21 when my pond is newly filled up and my bb is still on the process of growing up hehehe yes its really bad when ammonia strikes your koi but now i am happy ive got 0 ppm ammonia and 8.0ph in my koi pond water... hehehe here is the pic
